Community Gardens

Our goal is to develop and support community gardens where people live, work, and gather across the 18 county WNC region and the Qualla Boundary.

Our Work:

  • Convening community gardens, organizations that support and educate farmers/gardeners and more across WNC to envision and implement solutions to creating thriving community gardens

  • Building relationships with, uplifting and supporting the work of community gardens across WNC

  • Distributing funds to existing gardens and to groups implementing a new garden

  • Developing a long term support network/system

  • Co-developing a map of all the Community Gardens in NC with North Carolina Community Garden Partners

Our Goals:

  • The Community Gardens Strategy Area's (CGSA) goal is to develop and support community gardens where people live, work, and gather across the 18 county WNC region and the Qualla Boundary.

  • People with access to community gardens where they live, work, and congregate feel welcome and a sense of ownership participating in and accessing food within those garden spaces.

  • People with access to community gardens where they live, work, and congregate have the knowledge and food access to better meet their household and community food needs, moving toward greater food sovereignty.

Results We’d Like to See:

  • People who are most directly affected by (and experts of) issues surrounding food insecurity/food apartheid are co-creating and collaborating on the planning process and the implementation of solutions.

  • People across the region experiencing low income/wealth have access to community gardens where they live, work, and congregate, as is wanted.

  • People with access to community gardens where they live, work, and congregate feel welcome and a sense of ownership participating in and accessing food within those garden spaces, and supporting food distribution systems within their community.

  • People with access to community gardens where they live, work, and congregate have the knowledge, skills, and food access to better meet their household and community food needs, moving toward greater food sovereignty.
